Pacific loggerhead turtles: in whose hands?
Because fisheries bycatch off the Baja California peninsula is currently the greatest documented threat to the critically endangered North Pacific loggerhead turtle, the future of this ocean- and culture-connecting migratory species is primarily in the hands of Mexican fishers. Ironically, it is difficult for many of Baja California's halibut and shark fishers to understand that loggerhead turtles are endangered because they can catch up to twelve turtles in a single day. In Caguamas Del Pacifico: ¿En Quienes Manos? Baja California fishers present the fascinating transpacific migration of the loggerhead turtle featuring hands-on deployment of satellite tags, rare underwater turtle footage, stunning Baja California scenery, and galvanizing turtle rodeo action sequences. Fishers share the staggering turtle mortality they encounter on a daily basis, and for the first time, propose alternative fishing strategies. Caguamas Del Pacifico: ¿En Quienes Manos? documents a landmark: Baja California fishers "owning" the fisheries bycatch problem and proposing practical ecological solutions to protect the loggerhead turtle, pan-Pacific multicultural symbol of wisdom and endurance. for more information see: http://www.grupotortuguero.org

The Pacific in Cold Blood - The Loggerhead Turtle
Loggerhead Turtles feed mainly off jellyfish. Because of this, they are very suceptible to rubbish (ie plastic bags) that are thrown into the ocean. I saw one turtle behaving oddly and feared the worse (they usually die if they consume a bag) but infact this guy just had some fishing line wrapped round him and I was able to free him successfully. Unfortunatly the camera battery ran out too early! Ben

South Carolina Wildlife TV - Loggerhead shrike
The loggerhead shrike is known for its unique behavior of impaling its prey on thorns, barbed wire fences, and similar projections, hence its preference for nesting near areas containing such objects. Though the reason for this behavior is not totally understood, it is supposed that it serves as a means of storing food, and also to assist in tearing apart the prey since the loggerhead does not possess very strong claws. Maligned because it occasionally feeds on small birds, the shrike feeds mainly on beetles, grasshoppers and small rodents. The loggerhead has extraordinary eyesight and can focus on a grasshopper in a field 50 to 70 yards away. "South Carolina Wildlife TV" is a production of S.C Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and South Carolina Educational Television and typically airs the second Saturday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Check local listings.

Protecting Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nests - St. Vincent NWR
Dedicated to Sea Turtle Volunteers Everywhere. At Apalachicola's St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge, we have a small, but tenacious, cadre of turtle patrol volunteers, who protect the endangered loggerhead sea turtle nests from predation by raccoon, coyote, and the non-native, feral hogs. We also provide annual data for long term monitoring of gulf sub-species population trends. With 57 nests, St. Vincent has had a banner year. Yet, it's always an exciting time on the refuge, and, as you'll see in this video slideshow, we love what we're doing! Photos were provided by the GeekGal, with help from Mike Vroegop, and Ray Ainsworth. The awesome cover of "Here Comes the Sun" by Richie Havens provides the soundtrack. Mr. Havens, George Harrison may have written it, but you brought it to life! Thanks to the following SVNWR turtle volunteers for inspiration: Lynda Smith, Mike & Robin Vroegop, Nancy & Landy Luther, Bob Sutton, Denise Williams, John Inzetta, Geoff & Norma Hewell, Bradley Smith. Also, trainees: Audrey Schmidt, Viginia Dixson, Irene M., Laura Q., and Susan C. Loggerhead midwifery
About 100 loggerhead turtle hatchlings -- thought by local environmentalists at Holmes Beach, Florida to have hatched and made their way to the Gulf of Mexico -- were instead "one day late." Several hours from the time their biological clocks would have sent them crawling up through about a foot of sand, streaming toward the surf, local volunteer preservationists excavated their nest, expecting to find and count only empty shells or infertile eggs. Instead, 96 writhing hatchlings got a helping hand out of their sandy cavern. They spent several hours in a green plastic "neonatal intensive care unit" until their release after dusk to follow their instincts to the sea.
